Firearms Storage Statement

A firearms storage statement is the written account of how firearms are stored at a place, for the licence holder to provide to WA Police Firearms. Safe Central does not lodge it. We issue the install certificate. You send both, or whatever WA Police ask you for on your own licence path.

This page is how we write that paperwork in Perth. It is general guidance from our installs, not a substitute for WA Police. Confirm your own requirements with WA Police Firearms before you rely on it.

What we put on the certificate

After a police-licensed install we issue an in-house certificate. It covers three things:

  • The safe type, including the storage level it is being used for (Level 1, 2 or 3, or a secure room where that is the path).
  • The fixings used: mechanical, chemical, or both, and which faces of the safe they go through.
  • Why we deem that install compliant with the Firearms Regulations 2024 storage level that applies at that place.

We created this certificate so the reasoning is on paper for the department. We do not send it to WA Police. You do.

What the statement has to line up with

The certificate only makes sense against the storage matrix. That matrix is set by the firearms at the location, not by how many each person owns. Read it as: how many firearms, whether the place is occupied or unoccupied, then the category, including any Category H.

Occupied means regular occupants. Unoccupied means no regular occupants. A shed, garage, holiday house or vacant rental is unoccupied if nobody is living there as a matter of course. The unoccupied column is the higher bar.

The install the statement is describing

If the empty safe is under 500 kg it has to be anchored. The anchoring has to be capable of withstanding 100 kN. Locks have to meet Schedule 4, including protection against kinetic attack. Cabinets we supply for these levels are on gun safes. Bring the quantity, the categories, and whether the storage place is occupied or unoccupied. We will match the cabinet and the fixings to that column, then write the certificate against the install we actually did.

What we will not do

  • We do not lodge the statement or the certificate with WA Police.
  • We do not decide grandfathering. If you are told existing storage can stay, have the safe and the anchoring inspected against the path WA Police named.
  • We do not treat a statement as approval. WA Police decide.
